Robert W. Dubois, MD, PhD, chief science officer, National Pharmaceutical Council, says that medications are integral to the management and success of accountable care organizations (ACOs).

“If you think about ‘what is success for the patient?’ medications are a key part of it… but it’s also a key part of the ACO,” Dr Dubios says.

Proper medication management helps patients and health systems to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations and to avert health complications from conditions such as heart failure. ACOs also encourage shared savings based on the meeting of quality measures, which include medication management.

“Proper medication management is really a win-win-win for everybody,” he states.
