What aspects of the demographic and socioeconomic makeup of California creates challenges for patients when they are trying to access high-quality care?
There’s cultural-linguistic access, so apart from financial, but California is very diverse. The California Health Interview Survey that I run acknowledges this. In fact, we conduct the survey in English, Spanish, Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, Korean, and Tagalog.

There are barriers to care based on how well you speak English, so there’s some language access and there’re geographic barriers as well. California is not all Hollywood, it’s not all San Francisco; there is a large agricultural sector—I think it is the biggest agricultural sector across all states—and there are border states, there are states close to Oregon. So, the geographic differences, and the availability of providers, present barriers to care.

I think the cultural linguistic barriers, the geographic barriers and, of course, the financial and cost barriers.
