Duke's Mark McClellan to Give Keynote at ACO Coalition Fall Meeting
Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, who served as FDA Commissioner and CMS Administrator, will be the keynote speaker at the fall meeting of the ACO & Emerging Healthcare Delivery Coalition, presented by The American Journal of Managed Care. The meeting will be October 20-21, 2016, in Philadelphia.

PLAINSBORO, N.J.—Mark McClellan, MD, PhD, director of the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy, will give the keynote address, “Reforming Medicare,” at the fall meeting of the ACO & Emerging Healthcare Delivery Coalition. The American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC) will bring stakeholders from across healthcare to the Philadelphia Westin for the meeting, which is October 20-21, 2016. A physician and economist, Dr. McClellan has a unique perspective on healthcare delivery system reform. His talk will cover both the challenges and possible solutions for meeting the needs the aging baby boomer generation. Dr. McClellan draws on his service as FDA Commissioner (2002-2004), and then Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (2004-2006) when the agency launched Medicare Part D, creating a new prescription drug benefit for America’s seniors.
A fellow of the Brookings Institution, Dr. McClellan was named the inaugural director of the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy in October 2015, and was appointed to the Robert J. Margolis, MD, Professor of Business, Medicine, and Health Policy. The center develops evidence-based solutions in three broad areas: healthcare delivery, biomedical innovation, and education and the workforce.
The agenda for the ACO Coalition features emergent topics in delivery system reform and nationally known innovators. Sessions will include:
· A multi-stakeholder workshop featuring the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers, which developed some of the first methods to track high healthcare utilization.
· A two-part presentation for providers on implementing the Medicare Access & CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA).
· A panel in our Series 2020, featuring AJMC co-editors Michael Chernew, PhD, of Harvard; and A. Mark Fendrick, MD, of the University of Michigan and its Center for Value-Based Insurance Design.
“The ACO Coalition continues to attract the most important leaders in delivery system reform,” said Coalition and meeting chairman Anthony Slonim, MD, DrPH, who is president and CEO of Renown Health of Reno, Nevada. “What sets the Coalition apart, however, is the opportunity to learn both from experts and from the others attending the meeting.”
Dr. Slonim previously served as executive vice president and chief medical officer for Barnabas Health in New Jersey, which has now merged to become RWJBarnabas.
