About the Journal

A quarterly publication dedicated to providing a platform for health care professionals and organizations to share research and best practices in the realm of accountable care. The Journal seeks to educate its audience on the emerging role of new payment models and policy issues surrounding health care reform. The American Journal of Accountable Care® publishes timely research and analysis that encourage the sharing of best practices to ensure the improvement of health care quality.

Purpose: In December 2013, the publisher of The American Journal of Managed Care® introduced a new publication devoted to covering the nation’s transition from a fee-for-service payment delivery model to a model that pays for quality: The American Journal of Accountable Care (AJAC). The Journal is keenly focused on health care reform, and, in turn, new practices required by the transition to new payment models tied to measures of health care quality, efficiency, and value.

AJAC fills a void in the current publication landscape by encouraging the formal sharing of information about real-world interventions designed to improve population health, value for dollars spent on health care, and potentially innovative policy, payment, and organizational practice changes with the potential to benefit patients, providers, populations, and society. By publishing trends from the field articles and case descriptions in addition to original research, AJAC is a venue for stakeholders who have important insights to offer but may feel shut out of the traditional academic publishing space. This allows for a real-time understanding of the constantly evolving health care landscape and the sharing of information across stakeholders who often keep information within the walls of their organizations. AJAC’s peer review and editorial process maintains professional standards for evaluation of study impact and results, while being flexible to accommodate the many different forms of articles, contributions and different stages of work being reported on.

Evaluation Process: All original research articles are subjected to rigorous peer review by experts, including, leading clinical investigators, health services researchers, and health policy researchers. Manuscripts are also evaluated to determine the real-world relevance of the information they contain. In addition to original research, the Journal publishes review articles, trends from the field, case descriptions, commentaries, editorials, and letters to the editor. Review articles and most unsolicited trends from the field, case descriptions, and commentaries also undergo peer review. Manuscripts accepted for publication usually appear in print within 6 months from the date of acceptance.

Questions related to editorial content and submissions should be directed to Christina Mattina at cmattina@ajmc.com.

Readership: The Journal circulates to more than 20,000 individuals, including health care professionals, accountable care organization leaders, and insurance decision-makers. Additionally, all articles are available to read in full without a subscription at https://www.ajmc.com/publications/ajac.
