This supplement to The American Journal of Managed Care summarizes key national treatment goals, and guidelines and algorithms for the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and describes the role of some newer classes of antihyperglycemic medications, including incretin-related agents. It also summarizes the current understanding of T2DM health economics research, discusses the role and benefits of comparative effectiveness research in managed care decision making for T2DM, and describes key concepts associated with a value-based approach to managed care coverage of T2DM.
