Premature birth is responsible for an estimated $26 billion in costs to the American healthcare system annually, with high-risk pregnancies constituting a major category of high cost. Spontaneous preterm births due to preterm labor or preterm premature rupture of membranes represent the majority of all preterm births. This article identifies ways in which new technology can improve the diagnostic accuracy of pregnancy-related disorders and assist in managing the costs of high-risk obstetrics.
