End-of-Life and Palliative Care to Be Discussed During AJMC's November 24 Tweetchat

Article

During a tweetchat on November 24 at 3:30 pm EST, Amy Berman, RN, BS, and Judith R. Peres, LCSW-C, will discuss patient-centered care, palliative care, and end-of-life care.

PLAINSBORO, NJ—The national conversation on end-of-life care has shifted in recent years with Americans now strongly supporting discussions with physicians about this topic, the Kaiser Family Foundation reported in September. In addition, starting in 2016, CMS will allow Medicare to reimburse physicians for having discussions regarding end-of-life care.

On November 24, from 3:30 pm to 4:30 pm EST, Amy Berman, RN, BS, senior program officer with the John A. Hartford Foundation and a nationally known author and speaker living with stage IV breast cancer, and Judith R. Peres, LCSW-C, a consultant on long-term services and supports and palliative care, will join The American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC) for a tweetchat to discuss patient-centered care, palliative care, and end-of-life care.

“Six key Institute of Medicine reports have made clear that palliative care is essential to providing quality person and family-centered care,” Peres said. “Spending time to help people make informed decisions and recognizing treatment preferences are hallmarks of palliative care.”

On November 19, Peres was the reception speaker at AJMC’s 4th annual Patient-Centered Oncology Care meeting, a role that Berman has filled at past meetings.

Berman and Peres will answer questions from participants and discuss topics that include bringing up palliative and end-of-life care, common misconceptions, and the new CMS rule that allows Medicare to pay for end-of-life care discussions.

AJMC encourages Twitter users to submit questions and participate in the chat on Tuesday, November 24, by using #AJMCchat. And don’t forget to follow @AJMC_Journal, @JudithPeres, and @NotesonNursing (Berman).
