Addressing Health Equity and Social Needs

Addressing cancer patients' lack of housing or food insecurity affects care outcomes, but how can the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation build this into a reward structure?

The Enhancing Oncology Model (EOM) asks participating practices to track data on social determinants of health, and as moderator Stuart Staggs, MSIE, of The US Oncology Network stated, "As you know more things you want to do more things." Kashyap Patel, MD, described an initiative he launched at his practice, Carolina Blood and Cancer Care Associates. Building partnerships in the community is not easy and takes time while the need to care for patients is ongoing. Stephen Schleicher, MD, MBA, chief medical officer, Tennessee Oncology, said the process will formalize existing structures.
