VIDEO: Len Nichols, PhD, Addresses Medicaid Expansion
Len Nichols, PhD, Professor of Health Policy and Director, GMU Center for Health Policy Research and Ethics, College of Health and Human Services, George Mason University, says that if states do not expand their Medicaid programs half of the uninsured will continue without coverage. States will continue to pay for healthcare inefficiently while patients receive suboptimal care.
Dr. Nichols also believes that the state’s economy will suffer without the federal funding to the state’s Medicaid program.
This video was taken on September 12 at AHIP's 2012 Medicare and Medicaid Conference in Washington, DC.
Paul Ginsburg, PhD, President, Center for Studying Health System Change, says that consolidation plays a role in healthcare costs regarding the shift in hospital and provider market power.
The former nurse and hospital company executive, Marilyn Tavenner, has been confirmed as administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Tavenner has been serving as the interim administrator for the CMS since 2010. Her appointment, which has officially been vacant since Dr Mark B. McClellan stepped down in October 2006, came after much debate as to whether or not she should officially lead the organization.
