Keynote: Person-Centered Care: The New Business Case for Cancer

Amy Berman, BS, RN, says the new business case for cancer focuses on the individual. It has action-oriented outcomes, and is a value proposition. “We cannot be effective, if we do not engage individuals,” says Ms Berman.

Berman opens AJMC’s Patient-Centered Oncology Care event through both story and data. She starts by discussing the “new demographic” in oncology, which includes the increasingly growing aging population. She notes that 2 of the biggest cost drivers of cancer are treatment that doesn’t meet goals, and the absence of community-based support. Addressing these drivers could reduce costs and improve the value proposition. This value proposition ties into the triple aim of better health, better care, and lower costs. Ms Berman goes on to tell of her personal journey of treating cancer after being diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer. Through this story, she describes how those with both clinical and payer backgrounds can find opportunities to improve the treatment experience of patients with cancer.

She also says that the use of guidelines, such as those that ASCO’s Choosing Wisely provide, must be considered to complement both patient-centered and palliative care.

“I call myself the walking triple aim, because I’m better health, better care, lower cost. I have saved $500,000 at minimum,” says Ms Berman. “I live a great life, I get to do what I want to do, and I’m still working hard. I would not have had that great life. This is something that you can offer your patients—you can be proud every day that you offer your patients the very best. “ She concludes by saying that those in managed care have an ability to “offer it all” to their patients.
