How can big data help the healthcare industry achieve the triple aim goals?
I think one of the elusive goals since the first articulation of the triple aim has been actual success in any of the dimensions of it. And what big data can do, which would contribute significantly, is take advantage of all the disparate sources of very rich information that currently is just in siloes. So there might be information in the world of clinical research and evidence-based trials, there might be information sitting in delivery systems in the form of [virtual health records], there’s certainly a lot of information in pair systems (not only the cost of care but the consequences and associations of their various combinations of care), and then finally consumer sources of information.
For example, what are patients’ preferences, taking advantage of social media, and what sorts of incentives work. And right now none of that information is organized in any particular way. So to the extent that we can get over issues regarding our inoperability, make patients comfortable regarding the protection of their information as it relates to privacy, creation of standards, I think there’s a tremendous amount to be learned, and with the advent of cognitive computing capabilities, I expect to see very significant advances.
