The study in the June issue of The American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC) from the University of Michigan’s Center for Healthcare Research Transformation continues to gain attention, most recently on WJCT-TV, the public broadcasting affiliate in Jacksonville, Florida. Tony Brown writes about the study that found when Michigan expanded Medicaid, predictions that clinics would not want to see these new enrollees did not materialize. The study found patients in traditional Medicaid or Healthy Michigan, the expansion plan, were able to get an appointment in about a week for a non-emergency. Click here for the full study.
The September 2015 study in AJMC led by Duke University’s S. Yousuf Zafar, MD, MHS, who coined the term, “financial toxicity,” was featured in story in the Deseret News National Edition by writer Jennifer Graham. In a wide-ranging article, “What Cancer Costs,” Graham includes Zafar’s findings that only 19% of cancer patients had discussed their financial situation with their doctors, even though more than half wanted to do so when considering treatment choices.
