Infographic: Risk Behaviors Reported by Contact Lens Wearers in CDC Survey
A CDC study asked adolescents and adults about their contact lens practices and found that most reported engaging in at least 1 risky behavior.
Contact lens wearers are advised by their eye doctors to take a number of precautions to ward off infections, such as replacing lenses and storage cases frequently, using fresh lens solution, and avoiding sleeping or swimming with lenses in. However, a new study published in the CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report finds that most contact lens wearers had not followed at least 1 of those recommendations.
The rates of risky lens behaviors reported by survey participants varied by age among adolescents (aged 12-17), young adults (aged 18-24), and older adults (25 and up). The results indicate there is room for improvement in patients’ contact lens hygiene practices, and the study authors recommended strengthening health communication strategies targeting these behaviors.
