Dr Alvarnas attended medical school at the University of California, San Francisco. Following his training in Internal Medicine and fellowships in Hematology and Hematopoietic Cell Transplantation at Stanford University Medical Center, he started work at City of Hope where he was responsible for establishing the Banner Transplant Program. He subsequently worked as director of the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Processing Laboratory and chair of the Quality Committee for the transplant program. He is the national co-chair for 2 Bone Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network clinical trials, studying stem cell transplantation in HIV-infected patients. Dr Alvarnas serves on the American Society of Hematology Committee on Practice and as an ASH liaison to the Committee on Quality.
