ACA on Trial: 'The Mandate'

Next week the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on the constitutionality of the healthcare reform law, just days after the two-year anniversary of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). In a three-part series, MedPage Today takes a closer look at the main arguments for and against the law.

First up: The individual mandate. Later in the week, we'll explore whether the mandate can be severed from the rest of the law, followed by an analysis of the constitutional issues involved in the ACA's expansion of Medicaid.

President Obama's landmark healthcare reform law contains a provision that many consider its linchpin: a requirement that nearly every U.S. citizen have health insurance or else pay a penalty.
