Still Time for Submissions for AJMC's Annual Health IT Issue

Article

The American Journal of Managed Care’s annual issue on health information technology, which appears each December, has become one of the most anticipated publications of the year. Submissions for this year’s issue, being edited by Joshua R. Vest, PhD, MPH, are due August 1, 2016.

There is still time to submit original research and commentary for the annual special issue on health information technology (health IT), one of the most anticipated issues of The American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC). The submission deadline for the issue, which will appear in December, is August 1, 2016.

This is the sixth year that AJMC will publish its special issue on health IT. For the original Call for Papers and information on how to submit a manuscript, click here.

This year’s special guest editor, Joshua R. Vest, PhD, MPH, is an associate professor of Health Policy and Management at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis, where he focuses on organizational determinants and effectiveness of health IT and systems. Dr. Vest has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles in journals that include Health Affairs, Health Care Management Review, and the Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

As a previous local public health practitioner, Dr. Vest hopes to see submissions on cross-sector collaboration—perhaps involving the use of health IT in mental health or social services, or in the current opioid/prescription drug crisis.

“Health IT has to have an impact,” he told AJMC. The point is not the technology itself, but the outcomes it produces. “At the end of the day, health IT has to improve patient health, provider work, organizational performance, or public health. There are many avenues where this can occur, but we don’t have the best evidence yet.”

Brian Haug, president of Managed Markets, Pharmacy and Rare Disease and publisher of The American Journal of Managed Care, said AJMC’s research on health IT has made an impact. “AJMC was among the first to recognize the importance of health IT to managed care, and our research is increasingly cited by both scholars and the media.”
