The current environment is a difficult time for hospitals and health systems that are trying to do well while also starting to transition to a value-based payment system, explained Robert Pendleton, MD, chief medical quality officer for University of Utah Healthcare in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Despite the difficulty of making the transition, what tends to rally people is if they focus on the real reason why change is necessary.

“It’s not about our national healthcare crisis, it’s really about doing better for our patients, developing a delivery system that is more effective and efficient for our patients,” Dr Pendleton said.
