The new HL7 Data Elements for Emergency Department Systems (DEEDS) specification identifies a common set of data elements in an effort to improve interoperability among EDs. It's the first set of ED-related data elements to undergo rigorous standards development, according to an article at Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association.

Existing emergency care data exchange specifications, external reporting requirements and recommendations for emergency care are fragmented, incompatible and have been developed in an ad hoc manner, according to the article.
