Obese Patients Undergoing Plastic Surgery Incur Higher Healthcare Costs
The authors conducting the research attribute the higer cost in part to more frequent adverse events and hospital-based healthcare within 30 days of their surgical procedure.
After common plastic surgery procedures, obese patients have more complications and make more hospital visits—leading to higher healthcare costs, reports a study in the May issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the official medical journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Even after accounting for their higher rate of other medical conditions, "Overweight and obese patients remained 35% more likely to have an emergency department visit or hospital admission within 30 days of surgery," report Michelle R. Sieffert, MD, MBA, of Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio, and colleagues.
