Preoperative Statins Can Protect Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Patients
A collaborative study, conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom and in the United States, has found that statins could successfuly reduce mortality among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), compared with several other medications.
A collaborative study, conducted by researchers in the United Kingdom and in the United States, has found that statins were the most successful in reducing mortality among patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), compared with several other medications. Analyzing data from 16,192 patients aged 40 years and older who underwent CABG surgery, the researchers found that administering statins prior to surgery reduced the risk of death folowing the procedure by 67%. The other medications used in the study did not show consistent effects.Ssimvastatin, the mostly commonly prescribed statin, exerted protective effects, reducing likelihood of death by 77%.
