Becker’s Hospital Review and Healthcare Dive cited a study published in this month’s issue of The American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®). The study, “Influence of Out-of-Network Payment Standards on Insurer—Provider Bargaining: California’s Experience,” concluded that the state’s experience implementing a policy to address surprise medical billing demonstrates that out-of-network payment standards can influence payer—provider bargaining leverage, affecting prices and network breadth.

AI in Healthcare’s article on using artificial intelligence (AI) to detect seniors’ falls relied on the AJMC® published study “Real-Time Video Detection of Falls in Dementia Care Facility and Reduced Emergency Care.” The study found that the AI­—enabled video fall detection system using visual science reduced emergency department visits by 80% in 6 communities over 3 months. The study was also mentioned by AiThority.

A supplement to AJMC® on the opioid epidemic was cited in an article from Pain News Network. The supplement article, “Preventing the Next Crisis: Six Critical Questions About the Opioid Epidemic That Need Answers,” gives an overview of the full supplement, which includes both articles and commentaries on the epidemic, and poses 6 questions, including: what are the real opportunity costs of the epidemic, has the federal government failed states by inadequately performing its fiduciary responsibility, and can professionals be trusted to do the right thing?

America’s Health Insurance Plans’ Monday Wellness SmartBrief included AJMC®’s coverage of an initiative to address system-level drivers of burnout. The article, “Coordinated Wellness Strategy Nets Positive Results and Savings at The Ohio State University,” covered a case study from the university, which highlights how initiatives addressed system-level drivers of burnout and not only improved the health of faculty, staff, and students, but also saved money.

OBR Oncology’s Tuesday newsfeed included an article from AJMC®’s sister site The Center for Biosimilars®. The article, “Subcutaneous Rituximab Associated With Savings in Time for Patients, Practices Over IV Administration,” covered a recent study that evaluated real‐world practice efficiency changes associated with giving brand-name rituximab by subcutaneous injection, rather than intravenous administration, by studying differences in the amount of time patients spent receiving the therapy for cancer. Thursday’s newsfeed included their article “Oncology Group Says It Has Begun Treating Patients With Biosimilar Trastuzumab and Bevacizumab,” which covered OneOncology’s announcement that its partner practices have begun treating patients with the 2 anticancer biosimilars.

The National Pharmaceutical Council (NPC)’s Monday CER Daily Newsfeed included AJMC®’s interview with Rob Mechanic, MBA, senior fellow at the Heller School of Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University and executive director of the Institute for Accountable Care, in which he discussed evolving opinions of Pathways to Success. Tuesday’s newsfeed included AJMC®’s interview with Lani M. Alison, BSN, MS, HCQ, PCMH, CCE, vice president of Clinical Affairs, Regional Cancer Care Associates. During the interview, she discussed how innovation is being used to improve quality metrics in oncology.

NPC’s Thursday newsfeed included AJMC®’s article “CMS Says It Will Cover CAR T for Medicare Beneficiaries Nationwide,” which covered CMS’ long-awaited national coverage determination (NCD) decision for the cancer therapies. The agency approved the NCD without a few requirements that had some providers concerned. The newsfeed also included AJMC®’s interview with June Halper, MSN, APN-C, MSCN, FAAN, chief executive officer, Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers, in which she discussed the importance of shared decision making in multiple sclerosis treatment.
