ASCO Advocates for New Payment Models That Reward Quality of Care

The U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee has solicited ASCO’s feedback and input on strategies to overhaul the Medicare reimbursement system. In a letter responding to the Committee’s request, ASCO underscores the need for a more rational, functional, and sustainable system of payment that incentivizes quality patient care.

ASCO has provided national leadership and expertise in cancer quality measure development, specification and testing through its Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI). In its response to the committee, the Society emphasizes the importance of oncologist-led quality improvement efforts such as QOPI, and encourages CMS to leverage ASCO’s existing programs as part of payment reform efforts.
