Examining Health-Related Challenges Puerto Rico Faces a Year After Hurricane Maria

It's been a little over a year since Hurrican Maria hit Puerto Rico, devastating the island, its infrastructure, and its health system. While progress has been made, the island still faces challenges in providing high-quality care to its 3 million people. Healthcare providers still see demand for services related to physical and mental health needs, anxiety about the current hurricane season, and staff shortages.

InnovaCare Health, which has more than 450,000 members on the island, was one of many healthcare organizations impacted by the storm. We sat down with Richard Shinto, MD, MBA, president and chief operating officer of InnovaCare Health, to see what challenges still face the organization and its members, as well as how Hurricane Maria has influenced the organization's disaster preparedness for the future.
