Health plans have a long list of tools they use to deliver better value and access to health care consumers. One that’s worth noting is prescription drug formularies — lists of the generic and brand name drugs that are covered – that are developed to encourage the use of safe, effective, and affordable medications.

These formularies work with safety and effectiveness in mind. The goal is to ensure consumers can get the drug they need that will safely and effectively treat their condition at the most affordable price.

Formularies lead to lower drug costs, which consumers value. Seventy-eight percent of individuals are very or somewhat satisfied with how much they pay for prescriptions, a recent

poll

found. Moreover, those people taking generics gave slightly higher marks for price satisfaction than those taking brand name drugs.
