LGBTQ+ Medical Students Favor States With Protections

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) medical students are 56% more likely than their non-SGM peers to prefer training in states with stronger legal protections for LGBTQ+ people, even after controlling for rurality preferences, career priorities, and demographics.¹ This new study published online today in JAMA Network Open, suggests that state policy fights over transgender health care and broader LGBTQ+ rights are already reshaping where the next generation of physicians plans to practice well before their careers begin.
