Ora Pescovitz, MD, CEO of the Michigan Health System, says that academic medical centers like those at the University of Michigan are among those in the lead with patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs) and accountable care organizations (ACOs).

Michigan Health System participates in an ACO with 115,000 Medicare beneficiaries, as well as MiPCT, a primary care patient-centered medical home.

“I have to say we haven’t adopted those methods across our entire health system,” says Dr Pescovitz. “It remains to be seen whether these new methods will completely replace the fee-for-service, traditional methods of care delivery.”

Dr Pescovitz adds that the University of Michigan’s Center for Value-Based Insurance Design “is an innovative and creative center that has really led the nation in a concept” which could revolutionize how patients and businesses approach healthcare decision making.
