Who’s Driving the Growth of Medicare Advantage Plans?

Podcast

In this episode of Managed Care Cast, we speak with a coauthor of an article in June’s Health Affairs examining the racial and ethnic composition of beneficiaries in Medicare Advantage plans and the potential implications as the program continues to grow.

Medicare Advantage enrollment now represents more than a third of all Medicare beneficiaries and the growth of these private plans is expected to include nearly half of all older adults by 2029.

In this episode of Managed Care Cast, we speak with David Meyers, PhD, an assistant professor of Health Services, Policy and Practice at the Brown University School of Public Health.

In an article in this month’s Health Affairs, Meyers and his coauthors looked at who is joining these plans and what the implications are. One of the findings showed that between 2009 to 2018, the largest increases in Medicare Advantage enrollment were concentrated among those who are Black, dual eligible, and who live in areas with high concentrations of socioeconomic disadvantage.
