As Drug Pricing Grows More Complex, Scripta Offers Comparison Tools: Eric Levin

Scripta allows consumers to compare prescription prices, coupons, and insurance options in one place, helping patients and employers find affordable meds and smarter choices.

As prescription drug pricing grows increasingly complex, Eric Levin, CEO and cofounder of Scripta, says Scripta aims to simplify the process for consumers trying to find the right medication at the best price, in an interview with The American Journal of Managed Care®.

Levin described today’s pharmacy landscape as fragmented and confusing. Patients may face multiple purchasing pathways—insurance coverage, cash-pay options, direct-from-manufacturer programs, or emerging models such as TrumpRx. With high deductibles and copays designed to encourage consumer decision-making, many patients are expected to shop thoughtfully for medications. Yet they often lack the pricing transparency and comparison tools needed to make such decisions.

“If we can map all the drugs on the market to all the ways to save money on those drugs and put it into a format that’s easy for consumers to use, we can really help people navigate their benefits,” he said.

Scripta, typically offered as an employer-sponsored benefit, sits on top of a company’s existing health plan and pharmacy benefit manager (PBM). The platform functions as a comparison-shopping tool for prescriptions, allowing members to see who is selling a medication, at what price, and what trade-offs may apply. Levin likens it to a travel aggregator site, but for prescription drugs. The tool also surfaces available coupons and savings opportunities, presenting options in a single, user-friendly interface.

The company was cofounded by a practicing primary care physician who saw firsthand how similarly effective medications can carry vastly different price tags and how those prices can shift over time. By mapping drugs to pricing options and savings programs, Scripta seeks to keep information current and accessible, enabling patients to make informed decisions and have more productive conversations with their physicians.

Levin emphasized that most doctors want to help patients manage costs but lack real-time visibility into individual benefit designs. Every patient’s pricing structure differs, making it difficult for clinicians to track affordability during brief visits. By equipping consumers with clearer information, Scripta aims to optimize day-to-day prescribing decisions, improving affordability for individuals while helping employers better manage aggregate pharmacy spending without changing their existing benefit structure.
