Bruce Feinberg, DO, vice president and chief medical officer, Cardinal Health Specialty Solutions, says that the populations of Medicaid and commercial patients have historically been different.

“When you manage a population it’s really important to be able to understand: what are the behaviors of the treating physicians within that population, and also what is the disease mix with the Med population,” said Mr Feinberg.

Other problems emerge at the site of care. Mr Feinberg says that few physicians are willing to take risk in managing patients in their offices, and those patients are being sent to hospitals. This can drive up costs and is less favorable to patients.
