Florida Passes California as State With Most ACA Enrollees

Despite opposition from Republicans, Florida has surpassed California to become the state with the highest number of consumers enrolling in health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act's exchanges.

Despite opposition from Republicans, Florida has become the state with the highest number of consumers enrolling in health insurance coverage through the Affordable Care Act's exchanges, according to federal statistics. The state passed California to claim the top spot even though California has a much larger population, embraced the law, established its own state-run health insurance exchange, and has spent millions of dollars on outreach.

Florida's roughly 1.6 million enrollees include both first-time enrollees and some of the nearly 1 million Floridians who enrolled last year. California led the country last year with 1.2 million consumers, but lagged behind this year with a total of 1.4 million — 300,000 fewer than the state's goal.
