During the 2018 psychiatry conference, we sat down with several clinicians to get insight into the prevalence of internal and external stigma in mental illness and how this stigma creates barriers to positive clinical outcomes.
While strides have been made in understanding mental illness and mitigating both internal and external stigma surrounding mental health disorders, more progress is still needed. Patients with mental health disorders, such as major depressive disorder and schizophrenia, still face barriers stemming from stigma, which can lead to not just decreased quality of life but also hesistation to ask for help or seek treatment, which can exacerbate the illness.
During Psych Congress® 2018, we sat down with several clinicians to get insight into the prevalence of internal and external stigma in mental illness and how this stigma creates barriers to positive clinical outcomes.
