President Obama stated he will nominate Marilyn B. Tavenner, the secretary of Virginia’s Department of Health and Human Resources, to replace Dr. Donald M. Berwick, the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Berwick resigned Wednesday after the Senate denied his permanent assignment. Tavenner was Berwick's deputy.
“Don Berwick did outstanding work” in the assignment, said deputy White House press secretary Jamie E. Smith. “It’s unfortunate that a small group of senators obstructed his nomination, putting political interests above the best interests of the American people.”
