Understanding Autoimmunity in Type 1 Diabetes and Potential for Therapeutic Opportunities

Although type 1 diabetes (T1D) includes a reasonably small patient population, it does impose a significant impact on patients, caregivers, payers, and society. This piece explores the history; physical, economic, and psychosocial burden; and clinical pathophysiology of T1D to evaluate opportunities for earlier intervention to change the standard of care for this disease and improve overall outcomes.
