ONC Effort Aims To Boost Patient Engagement Through Health IT

Jodi Daniel, director of ONC's Office of Policy and Planning, wrote that ONC will "develop a policy framework for putting the person more at the center of their own health and health care, enabled by health IT."
According to ONC, the initiative has three goals:
- Increasing self-management and prevention;
- Seamless interaction with the health care system; and
- Shared management of health care (Murphy, EHR Intelligence, 1/13).
ONC said the goals will be met through initiatives already underway, including:
- Blue Button;
- The Consumer eHealth Program;
- The meaningful use incentive program;
- Federal advisory committee workgroups;
- The Investing in Innovation Program;
- Patient-centered outcomes research;
- Patient-generated health data; and
- Personalized health care
