Among veterans in Massachusetts, receipt of opioids from multiple sources, with or without benzodiazepines, was associated with worse opioid-related outcomes.

Opioid use incidence and prevalence rates decreased with implementation of an opioid safety initiative, whereas nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug rates remained constant. Rates of adverse events were higher among opioid users.

Longer primary care wait times were associated with small increases in glycated hemoglobin levels. Diabetes care quality improvement strategies should consider timely access to care.

Within the Veterans Affairs system, diabetes performance measures were similar in patients who received chronic opioid therapy and in those who did not.
