Of the many benefits that come from achieving a 4-star CMS rating or better, retention and growth are probably the biggest ones, according to Snezana Mahon, PharmD, senior director Medicare solutions at Express Scripts.

A majority of Medicare beneficiaries not only tend to find themselves in those plans that receive 4, 4-and-a-half, or 5 stars, but they can enroll in plans that receive 5 stars all year long, not just during open enrollment.

Achieving a high star rating helps plans “be known in the marketplace and the community as that high-performing quality plan that members are choosing year after year after year,” Dr Mahon said.
