Managing Negative Symptoms Associated With Schizophrenia
Panelists discuss how negative symptoms like lack of motivation, social withdrawal, and impaired expression significantly impact patients’ ability to maintain relationships and employment, representing a challenging aspect of care with limited effective treatment options.
Episodes in this series

Patients with schizophrenia often struggle with negative symptoms that profoundly impact their quality of life, including lack of motivation (avolition), reduced speech (alogia), and difficulty interpreting social cues. These symptoms create significant challenges for patients in maintaining family relationships, pursuing romantic partnerships, and engaging in social activities. Patients frequently describe feeling isolated even when surrounded by loved ones, preferring solitude despite recognizing that others are enjoying themselves.
The impact on patients’ vocational prospects is particularly challenging, as traditional employment opportunities may not accommodate the social and communication difficulties associated with negative symptoms. Some patients find success in jobs requiring minimal interpersonal interaction, such as groundskeeping, but these opportunities are limited. Patients also struggle with developing and maintaining romantic relationships, with very few individuals with schizophrenia achieving marriage or long-term partnerships.
Current treatment options for patients experiencing negative symptoms remain limited, with traditional antipsychotic medications primarily targeting positive symptoms. The recent approval of the first non-antipsychotic oral treatment offers some hope for patients, though access and effectiveness vary. Health care providers increasingly recognize that patients need comprehensive support systems, including case management, peer support services, and potentially prescription digital therapeutics to address the complex needs that medications alone cannot meet.
